Explanation

For each song that charted from the first Hot AC chart in April 1994 to the final chart week of December 2005, I calculated points based on the song's position on each individual chart. (Chart Purists will say that this chart is meaningless, but it's just for fun!).

It should be noted that R&R changed the Hot AC chart from a 30 position chart to a 40 position chart in 2002. Thus, to be fair, points were calculated for all years as if the charts had 40 positions.

2005 Update: Two songs increase their positions from last year. Hoobastank moves up from 24 to 10 with "The Reason", and it is the only new song in the top 10 this year.  "Heaven" by Los Lonely Boys jumps 24 spots from 51-27. In terms of new songs to the chart, Lifehouse has the highest entry coming in at #13. The song was still on the chart at the cut-off period, so it might  rank higher next year.  Finger Eleven is the only other top 20 entry, coming in at #19 with "One Thing".  Howie Day's "Collide" enters at #28, and is the song with the lowest peak position in the top 50. On the regular weekly charts it only peaked at #7. Rob Thomas' first solo hit comes in at #38, giving him 8 hits on the chart counting work with Matchbox Twenty. Seven of those 8 hits are in the top 40. Other new entries are by 3 Doors Down, Maroon 5, Green Day, Goo Goo Dolls, and Kelly Clarkson. A total of 9 new songs made it onto the chart, compared to 12 in 2004.
